The day you have been waiting on is lastly here. You can now publish GIFs on Facebook thanks to a workaround from Giphy. How to put a GIF on Facebook.
Giphy (an online search engine for GIFs), developed a code that makes GIFs in fact loop on Facebook. It works just like publishing a connect to a video. Either copy pastes the URL of the page for the GIF you have chosen, or embed straight to Facebook from that page from the part where it states "share GIF."
It will look similar to a video upload to your Facebook Wall or Newsfeed because you'll see a play button on the embed. When you push play, presto! You have a GIF. The only specification is the URL needs to originate from Giphy. However, who cares, GIFs on Facebook are lastly here. [Giphy]
Update 2: Giphy is back. However, it may be a little sluggish.
Update 3: Facebook representative connected to the state that "Facebook does not support animated GIFs." So for the record, Facebook does not formally support GIFs. However, Giphy links work like GIFs on Facebook, however.
